Pemoline(Cylert), Indications, RXlist:"CYLERT (pemoline) is indicated in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Because of its association with life threatening hepatic failure, CYLERT should not ordinarily be considered as first line therapy for ADHD (see WARNINGS).
CYLERT (pemoline) therapy should be proof of a total treatment program which typically includes other remedial measures (psychological, educational, social) for a stabilizing effect in children with a behavioral syndrome characterized by the following group of developmentally inappropriate symptoms: moderate to severe distractibility, short attention span, hyperactivity, emotional lability, and impulsivity." ******************************************************
Pemoline(Cylert), PsyWeb.com:"Pemoline ( Cylert ) is used to treat attention-deficit-disorder in children. This drug is from a family of drugs known as central nervous system stimulants. Originally used in older persons to improve cognitive functioning.
Do not give this drug to child that suffer from psychotic disorders that produce the symptoms of attention-deficit-disorder.
Long term use may affect growth." ******************************************************
Pemoline(Cylert), Medications Commonly Used In MS, National Multiple Sclerosis Society:"Pemoline is a mild central nervous system stimulant that has been used primarily to treat children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and adults with narcolepsy. It is used in multiple sclerosis to relieve certain types of fatigue." ******************************************************
Pemoline, Intensive and sustained air operations:
potential use of the stimulant, pemoline, Bipsychiatry.com
:"The present studies indicate that a 20 mg dose of pemoline may be suitable for maintaining nocturnal performance without having adverse effects on recovery sleep. ******************************************************
Pemoline, Pharmacology, HealthPlace.com:"Pemoline has a pharmacological activity similar to that of other known central nervous system stimulants; however, it has minimal sympathomimetic effects. Although studies indicate that pemoline may act in animals through dopaminergic mechanisms, the exact mechanism and site of action of the drug in man is not known." ******************************************************
Pemoline(Volital), Other Possible Bad Effects, Simple Psych:"In some cases, there can be some temporary slowing down of the childs' growth (height and weight). This tends to be more common when the child is receiving quite high amounts and should always be looked out for. 'Drug Holidays' (periods of time when the drug is not taken) may be taken, often at the start of school holidays, which allows the parent/teacher/doctor to look out for any changes in growth." ******************************************************
Pemoline, Treatment of chronic cocaine abuse and attention deficit disorder, residual type, with magnesium pemoline, May, 15, 1985, Amphetamines.com:"Research suggests that attention deficit disorder (ADD) may persist into adulthood, perhaps predisposing certain individuals to stimulant abuse. The authors describe two adults with chronic cocaine abuse and apparent residual ADD. After failing to respond to conventional treatment modalities, these patients were administered magnesium pemoline. Both displayed a sustained reduction in their cocaine use, without abusing pemoline. This finding suggests that the diagnostic assessment of cocaine abusers should include a search for a history of ADD. A carefully selected subgroup of this population may benefit from treatment with other stimulant medications." ******************************************************
Pemoline, Contraindications, Support 4 Hope:"In patients with known hypersensitivity or idiosyncrasy to the drug.
Pemoline is not recommended for children less than 6 years since its safety and efficacy in this age group have not been established.
Clinical experience suggests that in psychotic children, administration of pemoline may exacerbate symptoms of behavior disturbance and thought disorder.
Data are inadequate to determine whether chronic administration of pemoline may be associated with growth inhibition; therefore, growth should be monitored during treatment." ******************************************************
Pemoline, Description, MEDLINEplus:"Pemoline (PEM-oh-leen) belongs to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is used to treat children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Pemoline increases attention and decreases restlessness in children who are overactive, cannot concentrate for very long or are easily distracted, and are emotionally unstable. This medicine is used as part of a total treatment program that also includes social, educational, and psychological treatment." ******************************************************
Pemoline(Cylert), Why is this drug prescribed, PDR.net:"Cylert is used to help treat children who have attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity. However, this condition does not always require drug treatment. Drugs such as Cylert should be taken as part of a comprehensive treatment plan offering psychological and educational support to help the child become more stable.
Children who have attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity may show signs of:
Emotional mood swings,
Hyperactivity,
Impulsive actions,
Moderate to severe distractibility,
Short attention span." ****************************************************** ****************************************************** ******************************************************
