Fluvoxamine, When should I be careful taking it, DrugDigest.org:"Before taking fluvoxamine, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to fluvoxamine or any other drugs. Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially MAO inhibitors as phenelzine (Nardil) or tranylcypromine (Parnate) even if you stopped taking them in the last 2 weeks, anticoagulants ("blood thinners") such as warfarin (Coumadin), astemizole (Hismanal), buspirone (Buspar), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cisapride (Propulsid), clozapine (Clozaril), cyclosporine, dextromethorphan, diltiazem (Cardizem), haloperidol (Haldol), heart medications, lithium, medications for anxiety and depression, methadone, sumatriptan (Imitrex), terfenadine (Seldane), theophylline (TheoDur), L-tryptophan, and vitamins. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart, kidney, or liver disease; or a history of depression or mania; seizures; or a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking fluvoxamine, call your doctor. If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking fluvoxamine. You should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you. Remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug. Tell your doctor if you use tobacco products. Cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this drug. Plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Fluvoxamine may make your skin sensitive to sunlight."

Fluvoxamine Maleate, Why is this drug prescribed, HealthSquare.com:"Fluvoxamine is prescribed for obsessive-compulsive disorder. An obsession is marked by continual, unwanted thoughts that prevent proper functioning in everyday living. Compulsive behavior is typified by ritualistic actions such as repetitious washing, repeating certain phrases, completing steps in a process over and over, counting and recounting, checking and rechecking to make sure that something has not been forgotten, excessive neatness, and hoarding of useless items."

Fluvoxamine, Drug Interactions, MedicineNet.com:"All SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), including fluvoxamine, should not be taken with any of the MAO (mono-amine oxidase) inhibitor-class of antidepressants, for example, isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), and procarbazine (Matulane). Such combinations may lead to confusion, high blood pressure, tremor and increased activity. This same type of interaction also may occur with selegiline (Eldepryl), fenfluramine (Pondimin), and dexfenfluramine (Redux). Fluvoxamine can inhibit the rate of metabolism of astemizole (Hismanal). This can theoretically can lead to dangerous heart arrythmias. Terfenadine (Seldane) is metabolized in the same way as astemizole. Thus, fluvoxamine should not be used with these two antihistamines. Fluvoxamine also can inhibit the metabolism of clozapine (Clozaril), necessitating dosage reductions of clozapine. Fluvoxamine also inhibits theophylline (Theodur, Slobid, Uniphyl) metabolism, sometimes leading to toxicity (e.g. nausea, vomiting). Other drugs which may be similarly affected include warfarin (Coumadin), alprazolam (Xanax), and triazolam (Halcion)."

Fluvoxamine, How should this medicine be used, MEDLINEplus:"Fluvoxamine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken either once daily at bedtime or twice daily, once in the morning and once at bedtime. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take fluvoxamine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Continue to take fluvoxamine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking fluvoxamine without talking to your doctor, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your doctor probably will decrease your dose gradually. This drug must be taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt."
