All about AATH: Board Certified Therapeutic Humorist? Wooten, Patty, From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Summer 1993, 3(2), pp 46-47.:"A "Board Certified Therapeutic Humorist"? Well, maybe not yet. But perhaps someday. I want to tell you about a wonderful networking opportunity for caring professionals like yourself. The American Association for Therapeutic Humor -- known as AATH -- is an organization for individuals interested in the practical applications of humor in their work settings. This group originated out of a Laughter & Play conference held in 1983. At that gathering, Allison Crane, RN saw several unmet needs in the field of humor-and-health. These needs included a clearinghouse for information on the growing volumes of humor research, some sort of Who's-Who-of-Humor, a way to network with like-minded people, and a method to promote programs and projects. There was no way to collect and distribute information, so individuals could stay on top of current research."

Clowning Around, Wooten, Patty, From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Spring 1997, 7(1), pp 46-47.:"I got to go to the circus, the Big Apple Circus, in New York City! And believe me, that city can be a circus. I spent a whole day with the Clown Care Unit at Babies' Hospital, part of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. It was a dream come true for me. Ever since I'd learned of the hospital clown (caring clown) program that began about ten years ago, I've wanted to see these clowns in action, up close and personal. Finally. I got my wish. The NBC show Real Life invited me to comment on the therapeutic benefits of the clowns' communication with the hospitalized children. I tagged along with the film crew as they captured the clowns in action. While two of the clowns performed at the bedside, I interviewed the other two in the hall. They spoke of their assessment process to determine each child's special needs. They discussed how they chose specific comedy techniques or routines based on the child's age, disability and enthusiasm that particular day. The clowns emphasized the importance of continued training and development of their performance skills to maintain the quality of their work. As I walked the halls of Babies' Hospital with the clowns, I was reminded of how nurses mentor new grads: first, by clarifying their observations, then explaining the rationale for their clinical decisions."

Creating a Comedy Cart, Wooten, Patty, From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Winter 1991, 1(4), pp 46-47.:"Greetings and giggles from Nancy Nurse, with more information to help you increase your smileage from life. Previous articles have explored some of the theory and research about how humor and laughter relate to our physical and emotional health. This article will discuss how one hospital made practical application of these theories. In September of 1988, Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida, (see Bubbly-ography, page 44) obtained a grant from the "Humor Project" in Saratoga Springs, New York to help fund the creation of a comedy cart. They began by forming a hospital wide committee and creating individual task groups to develop each section of the cart. The cart was divided into six separate sections: audio cassettes, cartoon albums, video tapes, humorous books, small games and costume parts, props and magic tricks. Each task force was responsible for screening potential material and for selecting a variety that would be most appealing to patients and visitors. A large cart was designed and built by hospital engineering to include different sections for each modality and large cabinet doors that could be locked. A special slot was included in the cart for the return of materials when staff was not present. A log book was created to maintain a record of materials checked out to patients, including date, time, patient name and room number, and the item that was borrowed."

Does a Humor Workshop Affect Nurse Burnout? From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Summer 1992, 2(2), pp 46-47.:"A few years ago I became curious about whether the humor training workshop I was teaching had any measurable or lasting effect. More specifically, I wanted to know if the workshop experience could decrease symptoms of burnout. I decided to do a formal research project to look into this and to present the results of that research at the 8th International Conference on Humor in England during the summer of 1990. Introduction: Increasing attention has been focused on investigating job stress and its consequences among nurses. In the United States today there is a severe nursing shortage in the acute care setting. Enrollment into nursing education programs has also dramatically decreased. Investigators have documented a number of major job stressors that nurses typically encounter, including emotional demands of patients, inadequate staffing, work overload and death. One potentially negative consequence of chronic exposure to such job stressors which has also received increasing attention is burnout (Keane & Ducette), (McCranie & Lambert). Burnout is defined as "a syndrome of emotional exhaustion and cynicism that occurs frequently among individuals who do 'people work' of some kind" (Maslach & Jackson)."

Finding Comedy in Chaos, Wooten, Patty, From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Summer 1995, 5(2), pp 46-47.:"If you talk the talk, can you also walk the walk? At the recent annual conference of the American Association for Therapeutic Humor (AATH) we saw that some people can. Over eighty health professionals attended the conference's Sunday afternoon closing session. Speaker Kathy Passanisi was teaching us how to use humor to enhance our presentation skills. Kathy had her audience of clinical psychologists, nurses, physicians, social workers, occupational therapists and teachers learning and laughing."

Gilda's Club, Wooten, Patty, From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Winter 1995, 5(4), pp 46-47.:"Gilda Radner could always make people laugh. As Roseanne Rosannadanna on Saturday Night Live, she would twist and distort reality to reveal the comic potential of current events and issues. Gilda Radner died of ovarian cancer in 1989. Her book, It's Always Something, chronicled her struggles, hopes, frustrations, and (most of all) her ability to find the humorous parts of her illness. As she noted, "Cancer is probably the most unfunny thing in the world ... but, I'm a comedienne, and even cancer couldn't stop me from seeing the humor in what I went through."

Physiological Effects of Laughter, Wooten, Patty, From Journal of Nursing Jocularity, Fall 1991, 1(3), pp 46-47.:"The medical community has recognized the harmful effects of stress upon the health of individuals for many years. Disease states such as hypertension, peptic ulcers, insomnia, ulcerative colitis, and coronary heart disease are, at least in part, a result of prolonged stress and poor coping techniques. Stress or negative emotion has been associated with immunosuppression, partially modulated by increased epinephrine and cortisol blood levels. It has been suggested that the pleasant feelings occurring with mirthful laughter can modify some of these neuroendocrine components of the stress response. Psychoneuroimmunology, a new area of research exploring the links between emotions and the immune system, has clarified some of the changes occurring in response to both positive and negative emotions. Dr.'s Lee Berk and Stanley Tan1 at Loma Linda University in California studied the changes in natural killer cell activity (NKA), epinephrine, and cortisol levels in response to mirthful laughter. Natural killer cells are responsible for the early recognition and removal of virus and tumor cells. Elevated levels of epinephrine and cortisol are known to be immunosuppressive."

Nurses' Station:"The idea for the Nurses' Station Catalog was conceived in 1989. After searching the marketplace in response to customer inquiries, it became obvious that there were no catalogs of this type serving the nursing profession. To be sure, there were several catalogs offering nurse's uniforms and a smattering of professional items. But there weren't any catalogs at the time offering a range of gifts, clothing, professional items, name badges, shoes and scrubs for nurses. It took two years of hard work to gather samples and put a together a catalog of the most unique and high-quality items for nurses."
